Dr. Abla Amawi

Dr. Amawi has many years of distinguished service within and outside the United Nations System. She most recently served as Deputy Country Director with UNDP in Pakistan and as Senior Programme Manager and Senior Policy Adviser with UNDP/Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP). Previously, she served as Country Representative for UNWOMEN Sudan and Egypt Country Director. Her former assignments included Governance Team Leader/Senior Advisor at UNDP/PAPP; Capacity Development Practice Team Leader and Regional Coordinator for Arab States; Assistant Resident Representative and Senior Advisor with UNDP/Jordan and Sudan in charge of Social Development, Poverty and Gender in addition to detailed missions to UNDP/Headquarters. Prior to her appointment with UNDP, Dr. Amawi had an extensive engagement in academia and policy research/publications. She taught political economy, political theory and comparative politics as a visiting assistant professor at Georgetown University, Randolph-Macon College (USA) and the Applied Science University, Jordan and published several books and articles. She also worked as a lead expert on democratization, poverty, and gender and as advisor to both Queen Noor and Queen Rania. Dr. Amawi, a Jordanian/American national holds a Ph.D. and M.A from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., all with distinctions.
