Too often learning is passive and theoretical. There is ample evidence that motivation is increased and learning more effective when the process is participative and relevant to real-world issues. What new methods have emerged that can connect learning to real-life experience, even in subject areas that are highly abstract?

I would like to encourage especially history teachers to create an international collaborative learning projects. Similar to this one - http://www.slideshare.net/lemino/what-does-pearl-harbor-mean-to-you - so that learners will have to opportunity to better grasp different perspective before they are heavily affected by their political environment. Or despite it. What do you think? How can this be done?

L'Ecole et la vie de tous les jours...ne pas couper l'apprenant de son milieu...naturel. Relier l'Ecole au quotidien de l'élève, voila le défi que doit relever l'Education. Ce qui n'exclut point l'ouverture au monde extérieur, au monde lointain.Enracinement et ouverture! Toujours partir du milieu de l'apprenant pour progressivement l'aider à s'ouvrir à l'autre. L'impliquer dans ce qu'on lui enseigne, c'est la meilleure manière d'apprendre aussi de lui pour faire progresser notre propre enseignement au centre duquel on retrouve l'élève, le disciple . La méthode participative est particulièrement gratifiante en ce sens que l'élève intervient directement et contribue à construire et à asseoir la connaissance à laquelle il aura participé. L'enseignement devient alors ..active et proactive. .

Ask yourself what you remember from all you've been taught at school? What I do remember vividly is always related to a better understanding of the world around me, probably because I tagged it as useful to remember. And I really enjoyed learning these things too: real-world learning is certainly a great source of motivation for learners!
