The premier WISE Summit – held in Doha on November 16-18, 2009 – set out to become a point of reference due to its innovative approach.
The Summit drew leaders and decision-makers from governments, businesses, civil society, schools and universities, international institutions, NGOs, grassroots movements, top-tier media, multimedia, the arts and other creative communities around the globe.
By driving innovation through the exchange of experiences and “success stories” - as well as anticipating future trends – WISE 2009 contributed to identifying new education techniques, players and technologies that will enhance human capacity.
Benefiting from Doha's geopolitical location, at the crossroads of civilisations, the WISE 2009 Summit allowed participants to share opinions and visions while addressing key issues.
For the first edition, the Summit focussed on a theme that is locally and internationally vital:“Global Education: Working Together for Sustainable Achievements”.
The main sub-themes of the Summit were addressed by internationally acclaimed, high-level keynote speakers and panellists.
Theme 1 - Pluralism: Creating education for respect and understanding, increasing access and equality in a globalised education.
Theme 2 - Sustainability: Sustaining educational systems: funding, governance, meeting needs, and integration of various educational levels
Theme 3 - Innovation: Facilitating and driving change in content, access, and delivery
Addressed through plenary sessions and breakout sessions, participants shared and created new ideas, best practices and experimental programmes for the challenging issues in 21st-century education.
