Mimi S. Baer is a senior educational consultant specializing in services to a wide range of organizations facing governance, management and planning challenges. She focuses her work on Systems Design and Conflict Resolution, where she assists leaders to understand and resolve the sources of conflict embedded in their organizations, Board Development and Training, Strategic Planning and Accreditation.
From 1987-2007 Mimi served as Executive Director of the California Association of Independent Schools. As Executive Director she led workshops for school leaders and trustees to strengthen school governance and accreditation, trained new and experienced teachers, and provided counsel to schools on a broad range of issues. During her 20-year tenure at CAIS the Association doubled its membership, expanded its professional programs, strengthened its accreditation process and solidified its financial base to assure affordable fees and dues for its membership.
Before becoming Executive Director of CAIS she served as head of an independent school for nine years and as President of the CAIS board and Chair of the Elementary Board of Standards. Prior to her career in independent education Mimi taught in public and special education schools, supervised student teachers, wrote and edited educational films, produced and moderated a public radio program on education and conducted educational research for the Rand Corporation.
She holds a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in psychology from American University, where she developed a program for elementary school counseling. She has fulfilled coursework requirements toward a PhD at UCLA in education and organizational management. More recently, she has completed training in mediation and conflict resolution with the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the Center for Dispute Resolution.
Among her volunteer activities is service as a member of the board of trustees of Pilgrim School, as a mediator with the Victim Offenders Restitution Service of Centinela Youth Services and as a tutor with the Santa Monica Public Libraries.
