Eberhard Becker, born in 1943, studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Hamburg, Germany, from 1964 until 1970 and received his Diploma in Mathematics in 1970. In 1970 he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Köln, Germany. From 1979 on, Eberhard Becker held the Chair of Algebra at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Dortmund.

Throughout his scientific career, he received numerous invitations as guest professor to universities and research institutes all over the world. Eberhard Becker was engaged from 1986 until 2001 as Editor and – subsequently - Managing Editor of the Mathematische Zeitschrift, and from 1995 until 2001 as Editor of the Springer Series Algorithms and Computation in Mathematics. He was coordinator and participant of European Research Networks, as well as of a research cluster and a Graduate School on “Data Security”. In 2000, the German Research Foundation DFG elected him Expert Consultant in Mathematics.

Becker gained management experience as the Head of Institute, Dean, and member of the university’s senate. He took a lead in developing the interdisciplinary degree course “business mathematics”, and in the development of the BA and MA degree programmes in computer science and mathematics.

From 2002 through 2008 Eberhard Becker was Rector of the University of Dortmund, re-elected in 2006. He pursued a clear strategy of internationalization for the university and further forced the strategic development of the university, resulting in its re-naming as “TU Dortmund University ” - in German, “Technische Universität Dortmund” - thus highlighting the particular strength of the university and its strong commitment to regional development.

In 2005, he was elected Chairman of the University Presidents’ Conference of the World Technopolis Association (WTA), and reconfirmed as such in 2009. His main activity includes UNESCO-WTA Symposia on Science Cities Development.
From 2005 through 2008 he was Chairman of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU).

At present he is a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP).
