Garrick Utley is the President of the Neil D. Levin Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce of The State University of New York. The Institute is located in New York City.

The Levin Institute’s mission is to integrate management/business skills with the study of international affairs to prepare students for careers and lives in the international arena, be they in the private, public or non-profit sectors. The Institute also develops and delivers programs to strengthen New York State’s and City’s competitive position in the global environment. It also serves as a center of research on the consequences that result from the changing global economy. Particular attention is paid to issues surrounding the evolving Global Talent Pool and to the challenges and opportunities they offer to developed and developing economies and societies. The Levin Institute has a public outreach role offering a series of conferences and special events. 

Prior to his present position, Utley worked as a broadcast journalist on NBC, ABC, CNN, as well as Public Radio and Public Television. With a primary focus on international affairs he has reported from more than seventy-five countries. Utley began his career with NBC News in Brussels in 1963. In 1964-1965 he covered the American entry into the Vietnam War. He then served as NBC’s correspondent in Berlin, Paris and London. In the 1980s he was the network’s Chief Foreign Correspondent working out of the New York headquarters. Utley also served as anchor of the weekend editions of NBC Nightly News from 1971-1973, and again from 1988-1993. He was the host of several network magazine programs, the Sunday edition of Today, and the moderator of Meet The Press. From 1993-1996, Utley was Chief Foreign Correspondent for ABC News based in London (1993-96), and from 1997-2002 he was a contributor for CNN. Currently he is a co-host of “America Abroad” on Public Radio, a program which examines the United States’ role and relationships in the world. 

Utley has received several of broadcast journalism’s most respected honors, including the Overseas Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow award, and the George Foster Peabody award. He is the author of the book: “You Should Have Been Here Yesterday” (PublicAffairs, 2000), a narrative of the growth of television news in the United States. Utley received his undergraduate degree from Carleton College, served in the U.S. Army and then spent a year of graduate study at the Free University in Berlin before beginning his work as a journalist. He holds honorary degrees from Carleton College and Pomona College. Utley is Chairman of the American Council on Germany. Board service has included the Council on Foreign Relations (1993-2003), Carleton College (1982-2006) and Public Radio International (1996-2008).  

Utley lives in New York City with his wife Gertje, who is an art historian.
