In March 2009, the Minister for Culture and Communication and the Minister for Research and Higher Education assigned Claudie Haigneré an important remit relating to the promotion of science and technology among the younger generation, namely to group together the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie and the Palais de la découverte in order to create a major establishment of national and European stature in the field of scientific and technological culture.

Holder of a Ph.D in science, doctor of medicine, rheumatologist, specialist in sports medicine and injuries, aeronautic and space medicine, biomechanics and physiology of movement, 51-year-old Claudie Haigneré is the only female astronaut selected by the CNES (French space agency). She has taken part in several flights and stayed aboard the Soyuz spacecraft, the MIR Russian space station and the International Space Station. A member of the ESA (European Space Agency), she was the only woman in the European Astronaut Corps.

Claudie Haigneré's expertise has also led her to accept ministerial responsibilities, firstly as Minister Delegate in charge of Research and New Technologies (2002-2004) and subsequently Minister Delegate for European Affairs (2004-2005). She has served as Adviser to the Director General of the European Space Agency since November 2005.

A member of the Academy of Technologies, the Academy of Air and Space, the Academy of Sports and Vice-President of the International Academy of Astronautics, Claudie Haigneré is also a director of France Télécom, Sanofi Aventis and several foundations, all of which are related to science and young people: the C. Génial Foundation, Lacoste Foundation, L’Oréal Foundation and Fondation de France.

In addition to being patron for the Cité de l'espace in Toulouse, she is also patron for the Myology Institute of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital and supports a number of associations which are active in the health sector such as the Maison de parents which assists the families of hospitalised children, the Alliance Maladies Rares (AMR: the rare disease alliance) and the Kourir association for children suffering from juvenile polyarthritis.

A Commander of the Légion d’Honneur, she has received other honours in Russia and Germany.

Author of countless columns, as well as scientific and medical articles, Claudie Haigneré is also keen on contemporary art (painting, sculpture), golf and reading. She has participated in gymnastics at a competitive level.

Married to the astronaut Jean-Pierre Haigneré, she has a young daughter named Carla.
