Tuesday, 17 November 2009
- 15.00-16.30
Mary E. Kirk is the Institute of International Education's Vice President for Student Exchanges. Ms. Kirk is based at the Institute’s headquarters in New York City and oversees many of the world’s largest and most prestigious scholarship programs.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is among the world’s largest and most experienced international exchange organizations, dedicated to increasing the capacity of people to think and work on a global and intercultural basis. For more than 90 years, IIE has promoted educational exchange around the world. IIE currently implements more than 250 programs benefiting nearly 20,000 men and women from 175 nations.
Ms. Kirk directs IIE's administration of the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Program for U.S. and Foreign Students and other flagship U.S. government educational exchange programs, including the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships Program and the David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships. These programs provide opportunities to more than 7,500 U.S. and foreign undergraduates, post-graduates, and teachers to study abroad, gain access to world class higher education, and develop a deeper understanding of the world beyond their home country’s borders. Ms. Kirk has led IIE efforts to develop academic exchange programs in virtually all world regions--including pioneering efforts in Eastern Europe, Vietnam, Iran and Cuba--and to broaden access to international study for underrepresented populations in the U.S. and abroad. She also works closely with the private sector and local communities in the U.S. to broaden the impact of IIE-administered programs.
Ms. Kirk led IIE’s efforts to establish offices in east and central Europe after 1989 and, from 1992-1995, served as the Institute's Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Eurasia, based in Budapest and Moscow. As director of the East Central Europe Information Exchange, funded by the Ford Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts, she published two reports, Where Walls Once Stood: U.S. Responses to New Opportunities for Academic Cooperation with East Central Europe and Continental Responsibility: European and International Support for Higher Education and Research in East Central Europe. Prior to joining IIE in 1989, she served as a program officer at IREX (International Research and Exchanges Board) for the Graduate Student/Young Faculty Exchange with the USSR Ministry of Higher Education.
Ms. Kirk holds degrees in history from Harvard University and Oxford University (Somerville College) and has advanced training in Russian. She is an active member of professional organizations and for six years has served on the Executive Committee of the Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Exchange. In addition to being an active member in professional organizations, she serves on the National Council of Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, New York, and the Board of the George London Foundation for Singers in New York City.
