Filiz Polat is an Associate Professor in Inclusive and Special Education at the University of Hong Kong, SAR, China, where she is also Honorary Director of the Centre for Advancement of Special Education (CASE).

She received her BSc in Psychological Counselling and Guidance and her first master’s degree (MSc) in the same field from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey, and an MEd in Special Education and a PhD in Deaf Education from the University of Manchester, England, where she worked as an educational researcher for over 7 years. She, then, prior to joining the University of Hong Kong, worked at the University of Bristol, England, for almost three and half years as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. She worked as school counselling psychologist both at a middle school and the Guidance and Research Centre in Turkey before pursing her academic career.

She serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the International Association of Special Education and acts as an ad-hoc reviewer for a range of journals, including the British Educational Research Journal, the International Journal of Inclusive Education, the Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs and Globalisation, Societies and Education.

She has been involved in a range of consultations and advisory boards, including World Vision, UK, Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) and National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), UK.

She is the recipient of a range of grants, including grants from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for International Development (DfID), the Department of Education and Skills (DfES), the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the Welsh Assembly Government, the Institute of Financial Studies (IFS), and the Nuffield Foundation. She served as an External Examiner for MEd and EdD programmes at Exeter University, England.

At Hong Kong she directs the CASE, co-ordinating MEd in Special and Inclusive Education, teaches PGDE, Master’s courses, BEd/BSc and supervises BEd/BSc, MEd, EdD and PhD students. Her country experience includes England, Hong Kong, Tanzania, Turkey and Wales. Her research interests include inclusive education; inclusive education in Africa; emotional, behavioral and social difficulties; post-16 transition of young people with diverse needs; psychosocial adjustment of deaf students; educational research methodology and school counseling.
