Michael Shattock, OBE, MA Oxon, Hon LLD Rdg, Hon LLD Warwick is Visiting Professor of Higher Education at the Centre for Higher Education Studies, Institute of Education, University of London, where he founded the MBA in Higher Education Management, the only programme of its kind in Europe; he was previously Registrar of the University of Warwick one of the UK’s most successful universities.
He has published widely in higher education: his most recent books are Managing Successful Universities, 2003 (also published in Chinese and Arabic translations), Managing Good Governance in Higher Education, 2006, and Entrepreneurialism in Universities and the Knowledge Economy (Ed), 2009, all published by the Open University Press, and Entrepreneurialism and the Transformation of Russian Universities (Ed), 2004, published by Unesco/IIEP; he is currently researching a book on policy making in British higher education; he has published over 80 articles /chapters in books. He edited the journals Higher Education Quarterly (1986-96) and Minerva (1996-2000).
He is well known for a number of high-profile inquiries into university governance and management issues, notably University College, Cardiff (1987), the University of the West Indies (1994), the European University Institute, Florence (1996), the University of Cambridge (2001), the University of Ghana (2006) and has been asked to advise on higher education issues in Canada, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Lesotho, Malta, New Zealand, Palestinian West Bank, South Africa and UAE. He has worked closely with the OECD, was a member of the IMHE Board and Editor of the OECD journal Higher Education Management and Policy (2000-2008); he led the IMHE programme of support to universities in the East European ‘transition’ countries (1992-94) and chaired the OECD Review of Irish Higher Education (2003).
