Mr. André Melo
André Melo is a young Law student from Rio Branco – a small Brazilian city in the Amazon. Over recent years, social issues involving education, sustainability and human rights through youth empowerment have been the focus of his main projects and goals.
Since 2011, André has been a representative of his State in the Brazilian Youth Parliament, Co-Chairing the Committee of Education nationally. Due to his excellent mandate, he has been invited to speak and lead roundtables about Inclusive Education through the MERCOSUR Youth Parliament, sharing his experience with young people from Latin America in national and international events and conferences.
In 2012, he was selected by UNESCO to work as one of the ten international editors from around the world in the Youth Version of the EFA Global Monitoring Report, an important UNESCO publication on global education. In the same year, he was the youngest ever recipient of a Prize of Honor – the greatest honor offered by the State of Acre to a citizen.
In 2013, he was selected as one of the TOP 50 student leaders in the world by the Hesselbein Global Academy and the University of Pittsburgh. He has also represented Brazil in international conferences and summits such as the World Youth Congress, Youth Blast in the Rio+20, International Student Week in Ilmenau and the Global Entrepreneurship Summer School.
Today, he is the Outreach Director, as well as Co-Founder, of “Estudar Mais”, ambassador of the React & Change Project, the largest youth-led NGO in Latin America working to combat youth apathy and gender inequality, a Hesselbein fellow, and the only male journalist in Latin America at VOW (Voice of Women Initiative).
André is deeply interested in education, diplomacy, social activism, economics and languages. He believes in education as the most powerful weapon we have to change the world.
