Professor Goolam Mohamedbhai

Former Secretary-General, Association of African Universities, Former Vice-Chancellor

Prof Goolam Mohamedbhai, who is a citizen of Mauritius, did his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester, UK and his postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the University of Mauritius in 1972 and served as its Vice-Chancellor from 1995 to 2005.

He was Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities, and President of the International Association of Universities. He has also served on the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and was a member of the Governing Council of the United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan.

Prof Mohamedbhai now operates as an independent consultant in higher education, with special interest in Africa. He has widely published on the challenges facing African higher education institutions. Currently, he is a member of the Board of the University World News (Africa); the Advisory Council of the US Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) International Quality Group (CIQG); and the Advisory Board of the Centre for International Higher Education, Boston College, USA. He is also the President of the Mauritius Academy of Science and Technology.
