About the Project

Studio Y is an experiment in the Future of Work and Learning with a mission to develop young leaders and innovators for the world. Each year, it invites 25 exceptional young people from across Ontario to participate in an intensive eight-month fellowship out of the MaRS Discovery District, Canada’s largest innovation hub. Fellows are invited and challenged to ask big questions, work on what matters to the world, pursue what makes them come alive, and collaborate with others. During the eight-month program, they receive intensive training in 21st-century mindsets and skills, work on innovation projects and systems challenges with partners, receive access to a wide range of resources and opportunities, and become a part of a growing community of leaders and innovators seeking to build a more equitable, thriving, and sustainable future.

Context and Issue

We are seeing big shifts in the world of work. What we do for work is changing: we are becoming divided into a society of those who can participate in the knowledge economy and those who cannot.

At its core, Studio Y is about rethinking and redefining success and how we get there in work, learning, and society. What does it means to succeed? What does this say about the shifts we need to make in work, learning and society?

The possibilities opened up by these questions drive the project’s work in leadership and innovation, as it explores and experiments with alternatives to the status quo.

Solution and Impact

Each year, Studio Y invites 25 exceptional young people from across Ontario to participate in an intensive 8-month fellowship out of the MaRS Discovery District, Canada’s largest innovation hub. Fellows are invited and challenged to ask big questions, work on what matters to the world, pursue what makes them come alive, and do it together with others. During the 8-month program, Fellows receive intensive training in 21st century mindsets and skills, work on innovation projects and systems challenges with partners, get access to a wide range of resources and opportunities, and become a part of a growing community of leaders and innovators on a pursuit to build a more equitable, thriving, and sustainable future.

Future Developments

Leadership and Innovation Curriculum: Presently, Studio Y is in the process of building a holistic curriculum enabling fellows to explore topics such as Systems Thinking, Design Thinking, Entrepreneurial Thinking, Critical Thinking, Project Management, Facilitation, Mindfulness, Communication, and Collaboration.

Global Partnerships: As a movement-oriented program, Studio Y is always looking to build partnerships with other initiatives, focused on developing young leaders and innovators for the world.
