“It's been an incredibly exciting period for us since the last WISE Summit, as we aggressively pursue our strategy to build a movement of 30,000 teacher change-makers across India and East Africa, impacting learning for over a million children by 2017.

We have now raised over $6m in funding commitments since inception from 17 of the world's leading donors, including USAID, DFID, MacArthur, MasterCard, ARK and UBS Optimus. We have embarked on a strategy of training and supporting 21 leading education NGOs to embed our teacher change-maker methodology into their school networks and programs, including close WISE partners Pratham, Bharti Foundation, PEAS, Educate Girls and Room to Read. And, with strong support from the Indian national government, we have signed a formal partnership with India's largest state, Uttar Pradesh, to support them to run a search for micro-innovations and teacher change-makers across 200,000 government primary schools.

This momentum could not have happened without WISE's support. Several of our advisory board members (such as Harry Patrinos at the World Bank, Vijay Chadda at the Bharti Foundation, Shabnam Aggarwal, etc.) got to know us through meeting at the Summit three years ago. Our founding funder for our Uganda program, the MasterCard Foundation, similarly got to know us through an informal meeting at WISE. We embarked on our partnership with Educate Girls through meeting Safeena Hussein at the Summit. The significant coverage we received in The New York Times was after a discussion over lunch at WISE with their education correspondent. In fact, I used the second summit I attended (when STIR was just an inkling of an idea) to get feedback on the concept from so many leading education thinkers and practitioners, which gave me the confidence to launch the initiative in the first place.

I could go on but the message is clear - WISE is an incredible connecting platform for people who are determined and committed to innovate in education. It's also been an invaluable source of inspiration to feel part of a like-minded community innovators and reformers.

We are now working with our 17 funding partners and our advisors to develop an exciting strategic vision for 2022: to build a movement of a million teacher change-makers across the developing world, impacting learning for over 40 million children. This 2014 Summit will be critical to meet leaders from other countries where we are thinking about potential scaling.”
