The School in the Cloud
The School in the Cloud
The School in the Cloud project is a series of learning labs across India and the UK where children can embark on intellectual adventures by engaging and connecting with information and mentoring online and bring SOLEs (Self-Organized Learning Environments) to their own communities.
Today's children - regardless of where they are - need the skills to succeed in our increasingly complex, connected, and changing world. The School in the Cloud aims to design a learning experience where children are prepared for the future with the ability to answer big and challenging questions. In the SOLE, children are inspired to explore and learn from each other, using resources and mentoring from the cloud. Essential to unlocking that future is access to technology and English-language comprehension.
Learning is changing and, with technology, we have the chance to spark curiosity and confidence in children in places where there are no schools or access to the best teachers.
The innovative solution of the project is based on the idea that self-organized learning environments let learning happen. Fueled by big, child-created questions, self-discovery, sharing, and spontaneity, these types of environments let children's curiosity come alive to the world. A facilitator sets the self-organized learning environments in motion with a big question, and then stands back and watches as learning happens. Children search online and work together to seek answers and present their findings. This is what self-organized learning means. Educators of all kinds (parents, teachers, community leaders, Skype Grannies, etc.) play an important role in both facilitating how children problem-solve but, more importantly, giving them room to feed their curiosity.
The impact of the School in the Cloud is to nurture children who are prepared for the future because they are confident and curious problem solvers who seek solutions by working together, using technology, and tapping into global networks.
School in the Cloud educators are "experimenters in the wild" and at a very early stage. The goal in the next five years is to discover with children, educators and Skype Grannies, the essentials for self-organized learning, so that all children across the globe can go on intellectual adventures.
The following are being created:
1. A place where children can explore and learn on their own and teach one another from online mentors and resources: specifically, the development of the online platform and seven physical labs.
2. A community of educators, parents, and community leaders who are creating SOLEs: specifically, Skype Grannies, SOLE facilitators, and children using/engaging on the online platform and in the physical labs.
3. An experience where children tap into their innate sense of wonder because they are self-organized, curious, engaged, collaborative, and motivated by peers: specifically the children’s learning and session logs on the online platform and in the physical labs.
