Sudan

Abubakr was born in the UAE and lived there until moving to Sudan at the age of 11. He later graduated from the University of Khartoum with a B.Sc. in Electrical and Software Engineering. Abubakr has four years’ experience working in media, the arts, and development, and is the co-founder and current Creative Director of Nehna Media Group, which aims to creatively address pressing societal issues in Sudan. He is also part of the Sudan Debate Foundation and the Cultural Innovators Network, taking part in initiatives such as My Life, Tashkeela and The Dome created to address the current refugee crisis.

Abubakr was selected to participate in President Obama’s initiative, The Mandela Washington Fellowship despite being two years younger than the age of eligibility, and later Abubakr and his team were awarded first prize at Social Good Summit Khartoum for their prototype application that promotes peace and social cohesion. He has since begun utilizing technology to tackle SDGs, focusing on educating and reaching out to the underprivileged. Abubakr is also a caricaturist, and uses his cartoons to shed light on issues of public concern, and intends to pursue a hybrid MA in Technology, Innovation, and Education.
